The growing demand for more efficient AI infrastructure has helped chip-design startup Velaura AI secure fresh investor backing. The company said it raised $110 million in a Series A round, taking its valuation to more than $1 billion.

The funding was led by Seligman Ventures, with new investor Capricorn Investment Group joining existing backers Samsung Catalyst Fund, StepStone Group and Maverick Silicon.

Velaura AI develops low-power chips and software for data centres and physical AI applications, including robotics and autonomous systems. The company plans to use the new funding to accelerate AI product development and deployment, while expanding its engineering and customer-facing teams.

Earlier this year, Velaura introduced Titan Core, its proprietary chip-design platform focused on improving efficiency and reducing power consumption in data centre workloads.

“The next era of AI will be defined not only by better models, but also by fundamentally better compute economics,” said Rajiv Khemani, co-founder and CEO of Velaura AI.

Khemani said Velaura is in discussions with 3 of the 4 largest cloud computing providers as potential customers, but did not disclose their names. The company said its technology has already been deployed in more than 30 million chips.

Velaura uses a pricing model that combines an upfront technology fee with royalties linked to a portion of the power savings achieved by customers. Khemani said the structure is similar to Arm’s per-chip licensing model before the company began selling its own chips.

Umesh Padval, managing partner at Seligman Ventures, said Velaura is positioned to benefit from rising AI data centre power requirements and increasing demand for energy-efficient computing in robotics.
