ByteDance and the Motion Picture Association (MPA) have agreed to strengthen copyright protections for AI generated content, following earlier concerns over how the Chinese company’s AI tools handled intellectual property.
The agreement covers ByteDance’s Seedance video generation and Seedream image generation models. It follows a cease and desist letter issued by the MPA in February over the 2 AI tools.
Disney and other major studios had raised concerns that the models could create content featuring copyrighted film and television characters, as well as celebrity likenesses, without authorisation.
ByteDance said newer versions of its AI models now include stronger intellectual property protections. The models are available through services including TikTok, CapCut and Dreamina.
The MPA’s earlier challenge came amid concerns that Seedance could generate content featuring copyrighted characters without permission.
Both ByteDance and the MPA said they will continue working together on safeguards for copyrighted material as AI technology develops.
