Expanding its portfolio of AI models, Anthropic has launched Opus 5, a new addition to its Claude family that delivers capabilities close to its flagship Fable 5 model at nearly half the cost.
The San Francisco-based AI startup said Opus 5 is designed for everyday business tasks, including office productivity and computer programming. The company also stated that the model is more efficient than Opus 4.8, which was introduced in May, reflecting the rapid pace of its AI development.
Speaking to a media publication, Dianne Penn, Product Leader at Anthropic, said, “We’re building and continue to consistently deliver frontier intelligence and bring that as accessibly as possible with every model generation.”
According to Anthropic, internal testing showed that Opus 5 is less capable of exploiting cybersecurity vulnerabilities than Fable 5, allowing it to operate with fewer safety restrictions. The company also said the new model is more resistant to attempts at misuse than its other currently available AI models.
Released in June, Fable 5 was temporarily made unavailable after US authorities raised concerns that its advanced capabilities could potentially be diverted for foreign military intelligence. Penn said users looking for affordability and everyday performance should choose Opus 5, while Fable 5 remains better suited for “days-long, very autonomous projects.”
Penn also commented on Kimi K3, the open-weight AI model developed by China-based Moonshot, which the US has accused of benefiting from Anthropic’s work. She said it “remains to be seen” how open-weight AI models will perform when handling complex real-world projects that users assign to Claude.
Unlike proprietary AI models, open-weight models allow users to download, run and customize the underlying AI model on their own systems.
