AMD has announced a major partnership with AI startup Anthropic that includes the sale of tens of billions of dollars’ worth of AI servers and a planned investment of up to $5 billion in the Claude developer. The agreement strengthens AMD’s position in the AI chip market, where Nvidia continues to lead.
The deal follows a growing trend in the AI industry, where chipmakers invest in AI companies that are also major customers. According to the companies, Anthropic will purchase up to 2 gigawatts of AMD’s latest Instinct MI450 AI chips, with deliveries beginning in the 1st half of 2027. AMD’s investment will be linked to specific deployment milestones.
Industry analysts said the partnership is an important step for AMD as it continues to build credibility as the second-largest player in the AI chip market. Following the announcement, AMD shares rose 2.4%, and the company’s stock has more than doubled in value this year.
Earlier, AMD also announced a multi-year agreement with OpenAI that is expected to generate tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue while giving the AI company the option to acquire up to around 10% of AMD.
Anthropic said expanding access to AI computing power remains critical as demand for its Claude AI platform continues to grow. Co-founder and Head of Compute Tom Brown said, “Access to compute is central to keeping Claude at the frontier and meeting demand from our customers.”
The company has been expanding its AI infrastructure aggressively. In May, it agreed to lease the full computing capacity of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 facility in Memphis, which houses more than 220,000 Nvidia processors and provides 300 megawatts of computing capacity.
Reports also indicate that Meta Platforms is in discussions to lease AI computing capacity to Anthropic under a potential deal worth up to $10 billion over 2 years.
Under the latest agreement, Anthropic will use AMD chips across its own data centres while also leasing additional computing capacity through cloud providers and emerging AI cloud companies.
