India is setting its sights on becoming one of the world’s leading biotechnology economies, with NITI Aayog unveiling an ambitious roadmap to expand the country’s bioeconomy to $691 billion by 2035 and further to $2.6 trillion by 2047.
The roadmap positions biotechnology as a strategic growth sector that could play a pivotal role in shaping India’s economic and industrial future.
According to the policy document, the next phase of growth will depend on India’s ability to embrace emerging areas such as synthetic biology, precision medicine, AI-driven research, advanced biomanufacturing and climate-focused bio-innovation.
A major recommendation is the establishment of a ₹50,000 crore BioEconomy Growth Fund to support research, commercialization and large-scale manufacturing capabilities.
The report also highlights the growing convergence between artificial intelligence and biotechnology, noting that data-driven scientific discovery and computational biology are increasingly reshaping healthcare, agriculture and industrial production.
If successfully implemented, the vision could transform biotechnology into one of India’s largest innovation-driven industries by 2047, positioning the country as a global hub for scientific research and next-generation life sciences.
