The AI industry is witnessing another major milestone as OpenAI has launched its GPT-5.6 model family, while Anthropic has received approval from the US government to resume limited deployment of its Mythos 5 cybersecurity model. Both companies are introducing their latest AI technologies in phases while working with US authorities on a framework for deploying advanced AI systems.

The GPT-5.6 family includes Sol, Terra and Luna. Sol is the flagship model, Terra delivers performance similar to GPT-5.5 at 2x lower cost, and Luna is designed as the fastest and most cost-effective model in the lineup. Initially, the models will be available through the API and Codex, with ChatGPT support expected at a later stage. During the preview phase, access will remain limited to selected trusted partners before a wider rollout.

OpenAI said the phased launch follows discussions with the US government. The company also stated that it does not want this approval process to become the standard approach for future AI releases and plans to continue working with the administration on a repeatable framework for deploying frontier AI models.

The company also introduced several new capabilities in GPT-5.6, including max reasoning effort mode, ultra mode with subagents for handling complex tasks, improved coding, biology and cybersecurity capabilities, along with stronger safety features such as automated red-teaming, account-level monitoring and real-time misuse detection.

At the same time, Anthropic announced that Mythos 5 has been approved for deployment to a limited group of US organisations responsible for operating and protecting critical infrastructure. The company added that discussions are ongoing to expand access to Mythos 5 and restore general availability of Fable 5.
