The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure in the United States is facing an increasingly organised backlash, with opponents of large-scale data centre developments staging coordinated protests across dozens of states in what has become the first nationwide movement against the industry’s explosive growth.
On July 18, activists organised approximately 142 demonstrations across 42 US states, reflecting growing concerns over the environmental, social and economic implications of the country’s data centre boom.
The demonstrations come at a time when technology companies are investing billions of dollars into AI infrastructure to support rapidly rising demand for generative AI applications. However, the unprecedented pace of development is also triggering concerns over the physical footprint of these facilities, particularly their intensive consumption of electricity and water.
Water usage has emerged as one of the central issues driving opposition. Communities have also expressed apprehensions regarding increased pressure on local power grids, land use changes, noise pollution and potential increases in utility costs.
