Samsung Electronics has reduced jobs across its U.S. consumer electronics business while relocating its American headquarters from New Jersey to Texas, reflecting the company’s increasing focus on AI and semiconductor growth.
The company said 739 roles at Samsung Electronics America (SEA) in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, have been affected by the headquarters relocation. SEA, which oversees Samsung’s consumer electronics operations, does not include its semiconductor business. Samsung stated that most impacted employees have been offered relocation opportunities, while others have been laid off.
In Plano, Texas, around 100 employees, including workers from the mobile division, have also been let go, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The relocation comes less than 1 year after SEA moved into new offices in New Jersey. The division employs around 1,200 people in the state. Internal documents informed employees on June 30 about an “enterprise-wide reduction-in-force”, describing the impact as significant. Recent professional networking posts also indicate that more than 30 employees, including senior sales and marketing executives across Texas, New Jersey and other U.S. locations, have exited the company in recent weeks.
Samsung said the headquarters move “may lead to changes in our workforce structure, such as employees who are unable to relocate, or certain functions that are optimized to ensure our roles align to key business priorities.”
The workforce changes highlight contrasting performances across Samsung’s businesses. While the company expects a 19-fold increase in 2nd-quarter profit driven by strong AI-related chip demand and has announced plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in new chip manufacturing facilities, its consumer electronics business is facing rising chip costs and intense competition. Its mobile division is projected to report its 1st-ever loss, while rivals such as Apple, TCL and Hisense continue to increase pressure across smartphones, televisions and home appliances.
The move also aligns Samsung with companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Tesla and Oracle, which have expanded AI investments and strengthened their presence in Texas due to its business-friendly environment.
Samsung said there is no broad global restructuring underway within its consumer products business and that the headquarters relocation is intended to “foster stronger collaboration and optimize the organization by bringing more teams together within a growing technology and AI ecosystem.”
As of the end of 2025, Samsung Electronics employed 11,770 people in the U.S., including its semiconductor workforce. Separately, Samsung SDS America has indicated that 179 roles in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, could be affected due to the relocation of its North American headquarters, which the company said is unrelated to layoffs or restructuring.
