Meta has announced a major expansion of its data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, increasing its compute capacity to 5 gigawatts to support the company’s growing AI ambitions. The expansion reflects Meta’s continued investment in AI infrastructure as demand for computing power continues to rise.
Since construction began in December 2024, local businesses in Louisiana have secured contracts worth more than $1.6 billion from Meta, highlighting the project’s impact on the regional economy.
The company said the expanded data center represents an investment of more than $50 billion in the Richland Parish region. Last year, U.S. President Donald Trump had stated that the project would cost $50 billion.
As part of the expansion, Meta also plans to invest more than $1 billion in local infrastructure. The investment will support improvements to roads, water systems, and wastewater facilities in the region.
Like other major technology companies, Meta has been investing billions of dollars in AI data centers and computing infrastructure as the demand for AI capabilities continues to exceed available supply.
The company has also committed to investing $600 billion in U.S. infrastructure and jobs over the next 3 years. These investments are aimed at building large-scale data centers that will support CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s long-term vision for AI agent technologies.
