Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has introduced a satellite phone service designed to provide reliable communication in areas where conventional mobile networks are unavailable. Launched under the theme “Communication Beyond Boundaries,” the service aims to ensure connectivity in remote and challenging locations where traditional telecom infrastructure does not exist or is non-functional.
The service uses dedicated satellite handsets developed in partnership with global satellite network providers, including Inmarsat. These devices are built for field use and are designed to operate in demanding environmental conditions.
The satellite phone features a rugged and durable design that can withstand dust, water, and physical impact. It also offers a long-lasting battery for extended use in areas with limited access to electricity. In addition, the device supports clear voice communication and includes a dedicated SOS emergency function for real-time distress alerts.
Since satellite phones operate independently of terrestrial mobile networks, they are primarily intended for specialised applications. The service is expected to support defence and strategic operations, disaster response and management, maritime and offshore industries, mining, deep-forest research, and travellers visiting remote or high-altitude locations, including pilgrims and adventure enthusiasts.
The BSNL satellite phone is priced at ₹1,34,166, inclusive of all applicable taxes. The company has also provided dedicated customer support channels for procurement and service-related enquiries, including the helpline number 9768866652.
While the higher cost may limit its adoption among regular consumers, the satellite phone service is expected to play an important role in strengthening communication capabilities for government agencies, emergency services, industries, and organisations operating in remote parts of India.
