US discusses voluntary framework for advanced AI model releases with tech companies

The US government is reportedly in advanced discussions with leading artificial intelligence companies to establish voluntary standards for the release of advanced AI models. According to a media report, an official announcement could be made as early as next week.

The proposed framework is expected to define benchmarks for advanced AI models, set release timelines and clarify who can access these models both within the United States and internationally. The move comes as the US strengthens oversight of advanced AI amid concerns that powerful models could be misused by military or intelligence agencies in countries such as China and Russia.

The report could not be independently verified, and the White House, Anthropic and OpenAI had not responded to requests for comment outside regular business hours.

In June, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing government agencies to work with leading AI developers to test advanced AI models before their public release and develop standards to guide future deployments.

Google is also reportedly in discussions with the US government ahead of releasing its advanced coding AI models. According to a source, the company is participating in wider industry conversations on voluntary AI standards.

The discussions come shortly after the US Commerce Department lifted export restrictions on Anthropic’s advanced Fable and Mythos AI models. The restrictions had been imposed less than 3 weeks earlier over national security concerns.

OpenAI has also faced similar limitations. Last week, the company postponed the full public launch of GPT-5.6 following a request from the US government, restricting access to a limited group of approved partners.

Both Anthropic and OpenAI are currently preparing for their initial public offerings (IPOs). The proposed voluntary standards could play an important role in shaping how advanced AI models are developed, tested and released while balancing innovation with national security concerns.
