Trump says Anthropic talks progressing as AI access restrictions spark global concerns

Amid growing concerns over access to advanced artificial intelligence systems, US President Donald Trump said ongoing discussions with Anthropic are progressing smoothly. His remarks came during the G7 summit in France, where AI regulation and technology investments were key topics of discussion.

The issue gained international attention after actions by the US administration led to restrictions on access to some of Anthropic’s latest AI models outside the United States. The move sparked concerns among businesses, developers and policymakers in several countries, including India, over future access to frontier AI technologies.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the summit, Trump said talks with Anthropic were moving in the right direction. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also indicated that discussions with the AI company were progressing positively.

The debate unfolded alongside a meeting between G7 leaders and leading AI executives, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis.

Highlighting the growing importance of artificial intelligence, Trump said the meeting had been successful and pointed to increasing investments in AI infrastructure in the United States.

“We had a great meeting with AI. We had all the top people here and it was a great meeting,” Trump said. “And, as you know, we’re building tremendous numbers of plants, but AI we’re building the biggest, the biggest in the world.”

The restrictions surrounding Anthropic have also raised concerns among foreign governments and businesses. Critics argue that sudden limitations on AI access could discourage long-term dependence on such platforms.

French President Emmanuel Macron echoed those concerns, saying AI risks should be addressed through cooperation among democratic nations rather than unilateral actions.

“We won’t buy any models made by these companies if overnight, you can just flip the switch,” Macron said.

The developments have also encouraged several countries to focus more on developing domestic AI capabilities and reduce reliance on US-based AI providers.
