In a move aimed at strengthening India’s response to cybercrime, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed a comprehensive overhaul of the National Cybercrime Helpline 1930. The review focused on improving the platform’s efficiency, responsiveness, and overall user experience for citizens reporting cyber fraud and digital crimes.

During a review meeting held on June 17, Amit emphasized the growing threat of online offences and called for several structural improvements to make the helpline more accessible across the country. A key focus of the revamp is the integration of artificial intelligence into the platform’s framework. The AI-driven enhancements are expected to streamline complaint management, improve case tracking, and support faster coordination across departments.

The Home Minister also stressed the need for extensive multilingual support on the helpline. Amit noted that language barriers often delay the reporting of financial fraud and cybercrime incidents. Expanding regional language accessibility is expected to help more victims seek assistance without communication challenges.

Shah further directed law enforcement agencies to work closely with state governments to ensure that every complaint registered through the helpline is followed through to its conclusion. Addressing concerns over bank accounts being frozen during cybercrime investigations, he instructed authorities to develop mechanisms for resolving genuine grievances quickly while maintaining the integrity of ongoing investigations.

The proposed upgrades come more than 3 months after the launch of the State Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (S4C) dashboard under the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C).

Data from the Ministry of Home Affairs highlights the scale of the challenge. Between January 2020 and November 30, 2025, the I4C portal recorded over 230 million visits and registered more than 8.2 million cybercrime complaints. Out of these, 184,000 cases resulted in FIRs. Total reported fraud losses reached nearly Rs 20,000 crore, while authorities successfully froze or returned Rs 8,189 crore linked to 361,000 cyber fraud complaints.

To strengthen the financial fraud response framework, 62 banks and major financial institutions had joined the coordination mechanism as of December 31, 2025. The government is now targeting the onboarding of all remaining banking platforms and financial institutions, including cooperative banks, by December 2026.
