Google explains why robots.txt does not guarantee removal from search results

A recent clarification from Google has highlighted why URLs blocked through robots.txt can still show up in search results, even when the search engine is unable to access the page itself.

The explanation comes amid ongoing confusion among website owners about the role of robots.txt in search visibility. Google stated that robots.txt is intended to manage crawling activity and does not prevent a page from being indexed.

According to the company, a URL can still be added to Google’s search index if it is discovered through sources such as external websites, XML sitemaps, redirects, or other publicly accessible references. Even when Google cannot crawl the page content, it may still recognize the URL’s existence and include it in search results.

Google further noted that pages blocked by robots.txt may appear in search listings with limited details. Since the crawler cannot access the content, search results may display only the URL or minimal information about the page.

The company also advised website owners not to use robots.txt as a method for keeping pages out of search results. While the file can stop crawlers from accessing content, it does not stop Google from indexing a URL if it is discovered through other signals.

The clarification reinforces an important distinction between crawling and indexing. Google emphasized that preventing a page from being crawled does not necessarily prevent it from being found and listed in search results.
