Digital arrest scams emerge as one of India’s biggest cyber fraud threats

A growing wave of cybercrime is sweeping across India as fraudsters use fake investigations, video calls, and impersonation tactics to trick victims into transferring large sums of money. Known as “digital arrest” scams, these schemes have become one of the country’s fastest-growing forms of financial fraud.

In these scams, criminals pose as officials from agencies such as cybercrime units, investigative departments, or law enforcement authorities. Victims are contacted through phone calls and informed that their Aadhaar card, bank account, mobile number, or a parcel linked to them is under investigation. Using official-sounding language, forged documents, and video calls, scammers create a sense of fear and urgency.

The fraudsters often keep victims connected through continuous video calls, falsely claiming they are under “digital arrest” or surveillance. Under pressure, many victims are convinced to share sensitive information or transfer money to accounts supposedly meant for verification or investigation purposes.

Authorities and cybersecurity experts believe these scams are part of organised criminal networks, with several operations suspected to be run from overseas locations. The fraud relies heavily on psychological manipulation, exploiting fear, trust in authority, and confusion to deceive individuals.

Recent investigations across the country have uncovered multiple cases involving victims losing substantial amounts of money through such schemes. Law enforcement agencies are increasing awareness campaigns and strengthening efforts to combat the growing threat.

Cybersecurity experts advise people to remain cautious when receiving unsolicited calls claiming to be from government agencies or law enforcement authorities. Individuals are encouraged to independently verify such communications and avoid sharing personal, banking, or identity-related information without proper confirmation.
