Google extends Gemini Avatar feature to more paid subscribers

In a move to expand personalized AI experiences, Google has extended access to its Gemini Avatar feature to a larger group of paid Gemini subscribers. The feature enables users to create a digital AI version of themselves that can be used to generate videos and other AI-powered content within the Gemini platform.

Powered by Gemini Omni, Google’s latest AI model, the feature is designed to replicate a user’s appearance, voice, and mannerisms. Users can access the tool through the Gemini app by navigating to Settings > Avatar.

The setup process involves 2 key steps. First, users complete a camera-based training session by holding their phone at eye level and capturing their face from multiple angles. This allows Gemini to build a detailed facial model. The second step focuses on voice training, where users read random phrases and numbers aloud so the system can analyze speech patterns, tone, accent, and cadence.

Once the setup is completed, the AI avatar is linked to the user’s Google account and can be used across Gemini experiences. The avatar can also be activated within Gemini conversations using specific commands.

Google has provided guidelines to ensure successful enrollment. Users are advised to maintain proper lighting, keep their eyes, nose, and mouth clearly visible, and avoid having other people or face images in the background. Glasses are allowed, but hats, sunglasses, and masks are not permitted during the setup process.

To address security and misuse concerns, Google has introduced several safeguards. Users must be at least 18 years old to create an avatar, and the account owner must be physically present throughout the enrollment process.

Additionally, all content generated using Gemini Avatar includes Google’s SynthID watermark. The invisible watermark is embedded directly into AI-generated content and can be detected using Google tools, helping identify AI-created videos and improve transparency.

Google has not yet confirmed whether the Gemini Avatar feature will be made available to free Gemini users in the future.
