Apple prepares major software evolution with iOS 28 roadmap

Even before Apple officially unveils iOS 27 at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026, reports suggest the company has already started work on iOS 28, which could become one of its most significant software updates in years.

According to reports, Apple has begun development of iOS 28 and macOS 28, internally codenamed “Bell” and “Poppy.” The two projects are reportedly grouped together under the nickname “Boppy.” While specific features remain undisclosed, reports indicate that Apple’s 2027 software releases could be far more ambitious than the updates planned for 2026.

The significance of iOS 28 is also linked to Apple’s expected 20th-anniversary iPhone, scheduled for launch in 2027. The device is reportedly being designed with major hardware changes, including a quad-curved display that wraps around all 4 edges, creating a near bezel-free experience. Apple is also said to be exploring haptic controls that could replace traditional physical buttons.

If these changes become part of the final product, iOS 28 is expected to be built to fully support the redesigned hardware and new interaction methods.

Meanwhile, attention remains on iOS 27, which Apple is expected to unveil at WWDC 2026. The upcoming update is likely to focus heavily on Siri and Apple Intelligence. Reports suggest Siri will gain the ability to understand personal context by analysing information from emails, messages, calendars and files stored on a device.

The upgraded assistant is also expected to understand on-screen content, allowing users to summarise webpages, retrieve information from messages and perform actions inside apps through voice commands. Apple is reportedly developing a dedicated Siri app for more natural voice and text conversations, along with a new “Search or Ask” feature within the Dynamic Island.

Additional AI-powered features may include a grammar-checking tool, AI-generated wallpapers, smarter writing tools, AI-powered health insights and Suggested Genmoji recommendations based on commonly used phrases and photos.

The Camera and Photos apps could also receive major upgrades, including customisable controls, Visual Intelligence integration and AI-powered editing tools such as Extend, Enhance and Reframe.

Apple is also expected to refine its Liquid Glass design language and prepare iOS 27 for future devices, including a possible foldable iPhone.
