Privacy-focused AI interactions are coming to WhatsApp as the platform announces Incognito Chat with Meta AI, a new feature designed for temporary and private conversations with the company’s AI assistant.
The feature is aimed at users who want to discuss sensitive topics related to personal matters, finances, health or work without leaving behind a permanent chat history. According to Meta, the feature is built using its Private Processing technology and will roll out gradually on WhatsApp and the Meta AI app over the coming months.
Meta said Incognito Chat creates a separate AI conversation session that can only be accessed by the user. The chats are temporary by default, with messages automatically disappearing after the session ends.
The company also stated that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can view the contents of these conversations while they are being processed. The system is designed to handle requests inside a protected environment isolated from Meta’s main servers.
According to Meta, the feature also hides identifying information such as users’ IP addresses and does not store records of the conversations once the session is closed. Messages remain encrypted during processing, and the temporary chat is automatically deleted after ending the interaction.
WhatsApp said the feature is intended to extend the platform’s privacy-first approach, similar to end-to-end encryption, into AI-powered tools that require cloud-based processing.
Unlike standard AI chats that may retain previous interactions for context, Incognito Chat starts fresh every time and does not carry earlier conversation history into new sessions.
Meta also revealed it is working on another feature called Side Chat with Meta AI. The upcoming tool is expected to provide private AI assistance within existing conversations without exposing the content of those chats.
The rollout marks a broader push by Meta to combine AI functionality with stronger privacy controls as AI-powered messaging tools continue to expand globally.
