A major shift in the AI industry is raising concerns across India’s IT services market after OpenAI announced the launch of its new AI-focused consulting and deployment business.
The company unveiled the OpenAI Deployment Company with more than $4 billion in backing to help enterprises build and deploy AI systems directly into their operations. The move has intensified fears that AI-native firms could begin competing directly with traditional IT services companies.
The announcement immediately impacted investor sentiment. India’s Nifty IT index fell nearly 3.7%, hitting its lowest level in almost 3 years. Shares of major IT firms including Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, HCL Technologies, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra declined between 2.5% and 5%.
The OpenAI Deployment Company will deploy engineers and AI specialists directly into enterprises to redesign workflows, integrate AI systems, and improve operational efficiency. OpenAI is also acquiring AI consulting firm Tomoro, bringing around 150 Forward Deployed Engineers and deployment specialists into the new business from day 1.
Industry experts believe the move signals a larger transformation in enterprise technology services. Analysts noted that AI firms are increasingly moving beyond model development and entering implementation and consulting services, an area traditionally dominated by Indian IT companies.
The pressure on the sector has already been building in 2026 due to rapid advances in generative AI and enterprise automation. Analysts also warned that increasing global AI spending could reduce demand for traditional IT outsourcing and software services.
