The United States has called for deeper technology cooperation with India, stressing the need for both countries to build secure and open AI ecosystems while reducing dependence on adversarial nations.

Speaking at the US-India AI and Emerging Technology Forum on Friday, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Bethany Morrison said emerging technologies like artificial intelligence can deliver major benefits only if countries focus on openness, interoperability, and security.

“But in order to fully realise the benefits of this incredible technology, we must be guided by the principles of openness, as well as focus on our security and our interoperability, and avoid any dependencies on adversarial nations,” Morrison said during the event organised by industry and policy organisations in the US.

She added that the US aims to ensure countries in the region have access to advanced technologies that can be integrated into society to improve outcomes for citizens.

Highlighting the growing AI race globally, Morrison said the private sector invested more than $300 billion in AI technologies during the first quarter of 2026, with over half of those investments going to US companies.

She also acknowledged India’s growing role in the technology ecosystem, noting that Indian companies announced investments worth $1.1 billion during the SelectUSA Investment Summit held this week.

“Indian companies are making incredible strides in this space and making real investments,” Morrison said.

The US official further stated that Washington sees India as a key technology partner because both nations share a similar vision for the future of AI.

“The Indian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, sees clearly that AI technology must contribute to prosperity for our nations, while also being clear-eyed about the security threats that we both face,” Morrison said.

She added that the US and India are well positioned to lead the next phase of global technology innovation together.

“I truly believe the United States and India are a fantastic match for this next phase of tech innovation, and I look forward to working with my counterparts in the Indian government, the private sector, the community of experts to help shape the future of AI in our American leadership and Indian leadership,” she said.
