ChatGPT introduces new safety feature to connect users with trusted support

In an effort to strengthen user safety, OpenAI has introduced a new self-harm prevention feature on ChatGPT called “Trusted Contact.” The feature is designed to help users reach out to a friend or family member when conversations indicate emotional distress or risk of self-harm.

With this update, ChatGPT will encourage users to connect with their chosen trusted person if it detects signs of self-harm in conversations. OpenAI said the goal is to provide an additional layer of human support during serious mental health situations.

The “Trusted Contact” feature allows users to select an emergency contact who can be alerted if there is a potential risk. OpenAI explained, “Sometimes, when you are having a hard time, it can feel difficult to reach out or ask for help directly. The trusted contact feature is designed to support real-world connections in those moments. It follows four steps, from adding a contact to notification.”

To set up the feature, users first choose 1 trusted adult, such as a friend or family member, and send them an invitation via email, SMS, WhatsApp, or in-app notification. The selected contact must accept the request within 1 week. If they decline or do not respond, the user must select another contact.

If ChatGPT’s automated systems detect conversations related to suicide or self-harm, trained human reviewers may assess the situation. If a serious safety concern is identified, ChatGPT can notify the trusted contact and encourage them to check on the user. OpenAI clarified that chat details or conversation transcripts are not shared.

The company also advised users to carefully choose someone they “feel comfortable being honest with and trust to respond with care.” ChatGPT explains its role and how notifications work when sending an invitation to the selected contact.
