Cyber fraud and online scams drive 49% rise in Telangana cybercrime cases in 2024

A significant increase in cybercrime incidents pushed overall crime figures higher in Telangana during 2024, according to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau. The report highlighted a sharp rise in online fraud, extortion, cyber stalking, and exploitation-related offences across the state.

Telangana recorded 27,230 cybercrime cases in 2024, marking a 49% jump compared to 18,236 cases reported in 2023. Overall crime in the state increased by 18%, while Hyderabad witnessed a 17% rise in total crime figures. However, Hyderabad reported a 17% decline in cybercrime cases during the same period.

The NCRB classified cybercrime cases under 16 different motives. Fraud remained the biggest reason behind cyber offences, with 21,987 cases linked to cheating and financial scams. Other motives included extortion with 414 cases, political motives with 55 cases, personal revenge with 36 cases, disruption of public services with 46 cases, and piracy with 14 cases. Cases related to sexual exploitation were also reported.

In terms of offence categories, fraud accounted for 18,922 cases. Authorities also recorded 953 fraudulent telephone call cases, 951 online gaming-related offences, 298 cyber stalking cases, and 220 cyber blackmailing incidents.

The report also pointed to increasing pressure on investigators. By 2024, police were handling 15,738 pending cybercrime cases along with newly registered complaints. Final reports were filed in 16,084 cases, many of which were marked as “true but insufficient evidence”, “untraced”, or “no clue” cases.

Chargesheets were filed in only 3,177 cases, including pending matters from previous years. Police arrested 2,171 individuals for alleged involvement in cybercrime activities. Investigation findings also helped authorities identify motives behind several offences. A total of 4,359 accused individuals were named in chargesheets filed during the year.

The latest figures underline the growing challenge of tackling cybercrime as digital fraud and online offences continue to rise across the state.
