Marking a major milestone for India’s private space sector, Bengaluru-based startup GalaxEye has successfully launched Mission Drishti, the world’s first OptoSAR satellite. The satellite was sent into orbit on May 3, 2026, aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg, California, making it the largest Earth observation satellite built by an Indian private company.
Mission Drishti combines optical and radar imaging technologies to deliver high-quality images in all weather conditions. It can capture clear visuals during both day and night, even in rain or cloudy environments.
This capability is expected to significantly improve data access for multiple sectors. Key use cases include agriculture monitoring, disaster management, defense operations, and coastal surveillance.
The satellite’s advanced imaging system addresses a critical need for reliable and continuous Earth observation data. By merging the strengths of optical and radar systems, it ensures consistent performance where traditional satellites may face limitations.
GalaxEye, founded by IIT Madras graduates, sees this as a stepping stone for further expansion. The company plans to launch more satellites in the future to strengthen India’s position in the global space ecosystem and meet the growing demand for dependable satellite data.
Mission Drishti highlights the rising role of private players in India’s space industry, especially in building advanced technologies that can compete on a global scale.
