Gemini AI set to transform in-car experience as Google upgrades vehicle systems

In a significant step toward AI-driven mobility, Google has started rolling out its latest AI assistant, Gemini, to vehicles with “Google built-in.” This update replaces the existing Google Assistant with a more advanced and conversational system designed to improve safety and ease of use while driving.

The rollout is expected to reach millions of vehicles. General Motors confirmed that Gemini will be available in around 4 million vehicles from model year 2022 onwards, including brands like Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC. The company also plans to expand the feature beyond these vehicles. The rollout will begin in the US with English language support and will also reach existing cars through over-the-air updates.

Gemini introduces a more natural way for drivers to interact with their cars. Instead of fixed commands, users can speak casually. For example, drivers can ask for a restaurant along their route with outdoor seating. Gemini can provide suggestions using Google Maps and answer follow-up questions about parking, menus, or dietary needs.

Beyond navigation, Gemini can adjust temperature settings, give real-time directions, recommend music, summarise incoming messages, and help draft replies hands-free. The goal is to reduce distractions and allow full control through voice.

A new feature, Gemini Live, is also launching in beta. It enables real-time, open-ended conversations while driving. Users can activate it by saying, “Hey Google, let’s talk,” or by tapping the interface. This allows activities like brainstorming or learning during a journey.

Drivers with compatible vehicles will soon receive upgrade prompts. Once enabled, Gemini can be accessed through voice, on-screen controls, or steering wheel buttons. Future updates are expected to expand integration with services like Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home.

As AI continues to evolve, the car is becoming a key space for innovation, with Gemini playing a central role in this shift.
