Google has introduced a new privacy-focused feature in Chrome for Android that allows users to share their approximate location with websites instead of providing precise location data.
The update is designed to give users greater control over how their location information is shared online while still supporting location-based web experiences.
According to Google, some services such as food delivery, navigation, or locating nearby ATMs require precise location access. However, other functions like local weather updates, news recommendations, or regional content only need an approximate location.
With the new feature, Chrome users on Android can now choose whether to share precise or approximate location details depending on the website and use case. Google stated that precise location sharing will still remain available whenever required for core functionality such as navigation services.
The company also confirmed that the feature will expand to desktop versions of Chrome in the coming months.
In addition to the user-facing update, Google is preparing new APIs for web developers that will allow websites to specifically request approximate location access or indicate when precise location is necessary for certain services.
Google has encouraged developers to review their location permission requirements and request precise location access only when it is essential for website functionality.
The move comes as technology companies continue introducing stronger privacy and data transparency controls amid growing concerns around digital tracking and user data protection.
