Meta begins removing avatar feature from WhatsApp, ends support for profile and sticker use

In a move that signals changing priorities, WhatsApp is removing its avatars feature from the app. Users who created digital avatars for their profiles will soon lose access to the option entirely.

The removal will begin with the ability to edit avatars, followed by their complete disappearance from profiles in a future update. The development was first reported by WABetaInfo, which noted that users are seeing an in-app notification about the change.

Introduced in late 2022, avatars allowed users to create miniature digital versions of themselves for use in profile displays and stickers. The feature was part of Meta’s broader push into virtual and immersive experiences, similar to avatar systems used on its Quest platform.

Along with profile avatars, avatar-based stickers will also be removed. However, the exact timeline for the complete rollout remains unclear. Meta has not shared detailed information on when the feature will be fully discontinued.

Once the removal is complete, users will no longer be able to create, edit, or share avatars on the platform. Despite this change, core profile elements such as profile photos will remain unaffected.

The decision suggests a shift away from metaverse-driven features within WhatsApp, as the company refocuses on other priorities.
