Google Messages adds new icons and verification marks to separate business chats from personal messages

Improving user control and trust, Google is updating Google Messages to make it easier to distinguish between personal chats and business messages.

The update focuses on enhancing the experience around Rich Communication Services (RCS), which has faced concerns in some regions due to marketing spam delivered through business messaging channels.

As part of the changes, Google is introducing a new design language for RCS for Business. Messages from businesses will now display a rounded-square icon across the app, including the conversation list, chat screen, and conversation details. In contrast, personal chats will continue to use circular icons, making differentiation more intuitive.

Additionally, verified business accounts will now feature a visible checkmark, helping users quickly identify trusted senders. This builds on existing verification tools, where users can tap a shield icon in the chat header to view a business’s verification status and other details, including encryption information.

The update applies to businesses using Rich Business Messaging for customer communication, such as updates, alerts, and promotions. The new visual indicators are expected to help users spot such messages more easily and manage them, including bulk deletion if needed.

Google has already outlined these changes, and the rollout is expected to reach users soon.
