In an effort to make content discovery more intuitive, YouTube is experimenting with a new AI-driven feature that changes how users search for videos.
The platform is currently testing “Ask YouTube,” a conversational search tool that allows users to type natural language queries instead of traditional keywords. The feature delivers a mix of AI-generated summaries, short clips, and full-length videos with highlighted segments, creating a more interactive and guided search experience.
Designed to feel like a conversation, the tool enables users to ask follow-up questions and refine results without restarting their search. This aims to simplify how users explore content across different formats.
The feature is being rolled out through YouTube Labs, the company’s experimental programme. Access is currently limited to Premium users in the U.S., who can opt in via the Labs website. The testing phase will run until June 8, 2026, allowing the company to gather feedback before a potential wider release.
“Try experimental new features. For a limited time, eligible Premium members have early access to try out new features. As a Premium member, you’ll also enjoy watching ad-free, downloads, and more,” said YouTube.
To demonstrate its capabilities, YouTube shared example prompts such as: “Plan a 3-day road trip between San Francisco and Santa Barbara,” “Unique ideas for a backyard water feature,” “Plan a living room redesign using thrifted items,” and “How to make a traditional French omelet.”
The feature is part of a broader set of AI experiments under YouTube Labs. Other tools being tested include “Beyond the Beat” for YouTube Music, which provides AI-generated insights, and “VibeCheck” for YouTube Shorts, offering AI-based publishing tips.
