A sharp rise in cyber-enabled fraud has pushed financial losses in Alaska to new highs, highlighting how online scams are becoming more advanced and costly.

According to a federal investigation agency report, residents in Alaska reported nearly $40 million in losses in 2025, marking a record increase. A total of 3,202 complaints were filed during the year, with financial losses jumping 52% compared to 2024.

At a national level, more than 1 million complaints were registered, with total losses reaching nearly $21 billion, up 26% year-on-year.

Cryptocurrency-related fraud accounted for a major share of losses in Alaska, contributing over $18.6 million. Among the most damaging scams, investment fraud led with $13.2 million in losses, followed by confidence or romance scams at $7.1 million, and business email compromise at $7 million.

Older residents were the most affected. Individuals aged 60 and above reported losses of $16.2 million, the highest among all age groups.

A senior official stated, “Behind these numbers are real people – Alaskan families who lost hard-earned savings, retirement funds, and financial security. To combat this ever-evolving threat, it has never been more important for residents and businesses to be diligent with cybersecurity, electronic interactions, and safeguarding personal and financial information.”

The report highlights how cybercrime is becoming harder to detect. Investment scams often promise high returns with low risk, while romance scams exploit emotional trust. Business email compromise cases involve manipulation of communication channels to commit fraud.

Authorities have advised individuals and businesses to report incidents quickly through official platforms and inform financial institutions immediately if funds are transferred. They also urged people to pause before responding to urgent messages or sending money.

Over the past 10 years, cybercrime losses in Alaska have crossed $158 million, showing a steady and concerning upward trend.
