Toronto police bust cybercrime ring using ‘SMS blasters’ to target thousands

In a major cybercrime crackdown, police in Toronto have arrested 3 individuals linked to a sophisticated fraud operation that used “SMS blasters,” a technology capable of mimicking mobile towers to target victims.

The investigation began in November 2025 after authorities detected suspicious activity involving an SMS blaster operating in downtown Toronto. According to Det.-Sgt. Lindsay Riddell, the device was installed in a moving vehicle, allowing it to operate across the city and the Greater Toronto Area.

“We believe tens of thousands of devices connected to the blaster over several months,” she said. Police identified more than 13 million network disruptions linked to the operation.

An SMS blaster works by imitating a legitimate cellular tower. It sends fraudulent text messages containing links to malicious websites designed to steal personal, financial, or login information from users.

Authorities also warned that beyond financial risks, the technology posed a safety concern. By intercepting regular cellular signals, it could disrupt access to emergency services such as 911.

3 men, aged between 21 and 27, from Markham and Hamilton have been arrested and charged with offences including fraud and mischief. The investigation involved multiple agencies, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, York Regional Police, and Hamilton police.

Officials have not yet confirmed the total financial loss caused by the scam. However, police stated they are “pretty confident” that the immediate threat from SMS blasters has been addressed, though risks from fraudulent messages continue.

Authorities are urging the public to stay alert. People are advised not to click on suspicious links in unexpected messages and to avoid sharing personal or login information through text.

The case highlights evolving cybercrime tactics and the growing need for awareness and digital caution.
