India supports Japan’s move to revise defence technology transfer framework

Reinforcing growing bilateral cooperation, India has welcomed Japan’s decision to review its framework governing the transfer of defence equipment and technology, highlighting the importance of defence collaboration in their strategic relationship.

Responding to a query during a weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “India welcomes Japan’s review of the Three Principles on Transfer of Defence Equipment and Technology. Defence and security cooperation remains an important pillar of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.”

He noted that under the Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation between India and Japan, both countries have committed to enhancing practical cooperation to support national security and sustained economic growth.

Jaiswal further explained that this includes promoting and facilitating technological and industrial collaboration between government bodies and private sector stakeholders. The goal is to build resilience in critical sectors linked to national security.

“This includes promotion and facilitation of technological and industrial collaboration between the government entities and private sector stakeholders for resilience in critical sectors to national security. So, welcome the steps that have been announced by Japan,” he added.

The development reflects a broader effort by both nations to deepen cooperation in defence and technology, while aligning their strategic interests in an evolving global security environment.

India and Japan have been steadily expanding their partnership across multiple sectors, with defence and security remaining a key focus area.
