Amid changes in the global semiconductor landscape, Qualcomm is evaluating a potential shift in its manufacturing strategy for upcoming flagship chips.
Qualcomm is considering moving production of its next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chip from TSMC to Samsung. The possible shift comes as Samsung’s manufacturing capabilities have improved, while costs at TSMC continue to rise. Earlier, Qualcomm had chosen TSMC over Samsung due to performance concerns.
Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon recently visited South Korea and held discussions with Samsung and SK Hynix. The talks focused on strengthening partnerships, especially as demand for memory chips grows due to the rapid expansion of AI technologies.
If the production shift takes place, the new Snapdragon chips could power upcoming smartphones such as the Galaxy S27 and Xiaomi 18. These chips are expected to be unveiled at the Snapdragon Summit later this year.
