As anticipation builds for its annual developer event, Apple has outlined new security expectations that could impact how devices connect to networks in the future.
The company has advised IT administrators and device management service (DMS) developers to prepare for “stricter” network security requirements that will be introduced with its next major software updates. These updates are expected to include iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, along with updates to watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS.
According to a recently published support document, devices running the new OS versions “might” refuse to connect to networks that rely on outdated standards or non-compliant TLS (Transport Layer Security) configurations. Apple has urged organisations to review their systems and “identify servers” that may not meet the upcoming requirements.
The company stated that servers must support TLS 1.2 or later versions and use ATS-compliant cipher suites to ensure secure connections. Additionally, valid certificates aligned with ATS standards will be required to maintain connectivity.
These changes will impact several network-dependent functions, including mobile device management, declarative device management (DDM), automated device enrolment, configuration profile installation, app installation, enterprise app distribution, and software updates.
However, Apple has clarified that certain connections will remain unaffected. These include those involving SCEP (Simple Certificate Enrolment Protocol) servers used during configuration profile installation, as well as content caching servers.
While Apple has not officially confirmed the names of its next OS releases, they are widely expected to be introduced as iOS 27, macOS 27, and iPadOS 27. The announcement is expected during the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026, scheduled to take place from June 8 to June 12, with rollout anticipated later in September.
