In a move to bring technology closer to traditional sectors, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) announced that over 2,500 beneficiaries, including artisans and craftspeople, have been trained in Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools under the PM Vishwakarma Scheme.
The initiative follows the vision of “AI for Social Good”, as highlighted by the Prime Minister during the IndiaAI Impact Summit and reflected in the Delhi Declaration, according to an official statement.
This programme is described as a first-of-its-kind effort across Government of India ministries. It focuses on integrating grassroots artisans into the fast-growing AI ecosystem.
The ministry said the initiative aims to bridge the digital divide for small entrepreneurs by combining AI with traditional craftsmanship. It also seeks to improve product value, boost global competitiveness, help artisans reach new markets and customers, and support inclusive economic growth.
Officials added that the programme is a key step towards transforming India’s artisanal sector into a digitally enabled and globally competitive industry.
As part of the training, participants were introduced to leading AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Indus, and Google Gemini. These tools were demonstrated for real-world use cases relevant to small businesses.
The training covered practical skills such as understanding AI basics and commonly used tools, improving branding and product design, developing packaging and marketing strategies, increasing business efficiency using digital solutions, and using AI to engage customers and expand market reach.
