In a step to make its AI tools more accessible, Google has extended the ‘Notebooks’ feature in its Gemini app to all users, including those on the free tier. The feature was initially introduced earlier this month for paid subscribers.

The update adds a dedicated “Notebooks” section within Gemini, located in the side panel above Gems and Chats. These notebooks function similarly to those in NotebookLM, enabling users to create video overviews, infographics, summaries, and other structured content to simplify complex information.

The feature is designed as a workspace where users can store chats, files, and sources in one place. This helps in managing ongoing research and brainstorming over time. Conversations within Gemini can also be saved directly into a notebook using the three dots menu.

One key capability is that Gemini can consider all stored chats within a notebook while generating responses. However, users can choose to disable this “notebook memory” if they want more independent replies. Custom instructions can also be added to control the tone, format, and style of outputs.

Within each notebook, sources are displayed above the prompt box, while saved chats appear below for easy access. The feature supports Gemini’s full range of tools, including web search and other AI-powered functions.

For free users, notebooks can handle up to 50 sources. Paid plans offer higher limits, with 100 sources for AI Plus users, 300 for Pro, and up to 600 for Ultra subscribers.

Google stated that its long-term vision is to develop notebooks into “personal knowledge bases” that integrate smoothly across its ecosystem. The feature is currently available on desktop, with mobile and Mac app rollout expected in the coming weeks.
