Amid increasing pressure on hardware costs, Meta has announced a price hike for its virtual reality headsets, the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S.
The company confirmed that the increase is driven by the rising cost of memory chips, a key component used in consumer electronics. Starting April 19, the price of the Meta Quest 3S (128GB) will increase by $50 to $349.99. The Meta Quest 3 will see a higher jump of $100, taking its price to $599.99.
In a blog post, Meta said that “the cost of building high-performance VR hardware has risen significantly.” The company added that “the global surge in the price of critical components — specifically memory chips — is impacting almost every category of consumer electronics, including VR.”
The issue is not limited to Meta. Other major tech companies such as Samsung, Microsoft, and Sony are also facing similar challenges due to rising component costs.
The revised pricing will also apply to refurbished Meta Quest devices. The 128GB and 256GB Quest 3S models will both see a $50 increase. However, prices of all Meta Quest accessories will remain unchanged.
The ongoing memory chip cost surge is also impacting other products, including Samsung Galaxy devices, Microsoft Surface Pro and Microsoft Surface Laptop, Lenovo Legion Go 2, and PlayStation 5.
