Snap announces layoffs and cost cuts amid AI shift and revenue pressure

Amid rising financial pressure and shifting priorities, Snap Inc. has announced a 16% reduction in its full-time workforce, impacting over 1000 employees as part of a cost-cutting strategy.

The decision comes as the company faces slow ad revenue growth and increasing investor pressure. CEO Evan Spiegel said the move is expected to save around $500 million annually. By the end of 2025, Snap had 5,261 employees, and this number is set to decline significantly following the layoffs.

In a letter to employees, Spiegel said, “While these changes are necessary to realise Snap’s long-term potential.” The company also highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence in its operations. The memo added, “We believe that rapid advancements in artificial intelligence enable our teams to reduce repetitive work, increase velocity, and better support our community, partners, and advertisers. We have already witnessed small squads leveraging AI tools to drive meaningful progress across several important initiatives.”

Along with layoffs, Snap is cancelling over 300 planned job openings that were yet to be filled. Spiegel added, “As a result of these changes, we expect to reduce our annualised cost base by more than $500 million by the second half of 2026, helping to establish a clearer path to net-income profitability.”

The company reported a 12% rise in revenue to about $1.53 billion in the first quarter, with a profit of $233 million. However, its stock has declined nearly 31% this year. Snap is also facing slower user growth due to government restrictions and bans on social media usage for teenagers. Efforts to revamp its advertising business have seen mixed results.

For affected employees, Snap will provide 4 months of severance pay, healthcare coverage, and equity vesting in the US, along with career transition support. Employees outside the US will receive benefits as per local laws and standards.

“To our departing colleagues: thank you. Your hard work has helped shape Snap, and we are deeply grateful for your contributions,” Spiegel said.

Impacted employees in the US will receive an email with next steps, while details for non-US employees will be shared by leadership and HR.
