Samsung expands satellite messaging to Galaxy lineup via Starlink in Japan

Samsung has confirmed that 8 Galaxy smartphones will support SoftBank Starlink Direct in Japan, a satellite-to-smartphone service launched on April 10, 2026. The feature enables connectivity without requiring additional apps or extra fees, as it is included in existing plans for SoftBank and Y!mobile users.

The supported devices include Galaxy S26, S26+, S26 Ultra, S25, S25 Ultra, Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, and A25 5G. Notably, the A25 5G, a budget device, is part of the same list as premium models like the S26 Ultra, highlighting broader accessibility of satellite connectivity.

Users must have a SoftBank SIM, Y!mobile SIM, or LINEMO connection to access the service.

With this satellite support, users can:

  • Send text messages
  • Receive certain emergency alerts, including earthquake warnings
  • Access data on supported apps

However, voice calls and emergency calling are not supported. The service activates only outside SoftBank’s ground network coverage and requires a clear line of sight to the satellite.

This development is particularly relevant for Japan, where natural disasters such as earthquakes can disrupt communication infrastructure by damaging towers and cutting fiber networks, leaving regions disconnected for extended periods.

SoftBank has been actively advancing its Starlink integration strategy, and this move, combined with Samsung’s strong presence in Japan’s premium Android market, is expected to improve connectivity resilience. Samsung also plans to expand satellite support to more devices in the future.
