Expanding its offerings in India, OpenAI has introduced a new ChatGPT Pro plan priced at Rs 10,699 per month, aimed at heavy users and developers. The new tier sits between the existing Plus plan at Rs 1,999 and the $200 top-tier plan, which is currently not listed on the official pricing page.
With this update, the pricing structure now ranges from a free tier to Rs 399 for the Go plan, Rs 1,999 for Plus, and Rs 10,699 for Pro. The wide range is designed to cater to both casual users and professionals who rely heavily on AI tools.
A key highlight of the Pro plan is access to Codex, ChatGPT’s coding tool. The new tier offers nearly 5 times the Codex capacity compared to the Plus plan, making it more suitable for developers handling real workloads instead of occasional use.
Reacting to the launch, Sam Altman said, “very nice to see Codex getting so much love,” and added that the plan was introduced “by very popular demand.” This suggests the move is based on strong user feedback rather than a purely strategic rollout.
However, it is important to note that none of the plans, including Pro, provide unlimited access. OpenAI is currently offering temporarily higher usage limits for the Rs 10,699 plan until May 31, after which these limits are expected to be reduced.
The launch comes at a time of growing competition in the AI subscription market. Anthropic offers Claude Pro at $17 per month and a Max tier between $100 and $200, though India pricing is not specified. Google provides Gemini plans starting at Rs 399 and going up to Rs 24,500. Perplexity AI offers its Pro plan at around Rs 1,700 and Max at nearly Rs 17,000.
Against this backdrop, OpenAI’s Pro plan positions itself in the middle — more accessible than high-end options but significantly more expensive than mid-tier alternatives.
The timing aligns with rising adoption, as Codex now reportedly has over 3 million weekly users globally. India, with its large developer base, remains a key market for AI growth.
Whether users will upgrade from Rs 1,999 to Rs 10,699 will depend on how valuable they find the added capabilities.
