In a unique scientific experiment, a group of tiny worms is set to launch to the International Space Station on April 11 to help researchers understand how living organisms adapt to space.
The mission will see British scientists send Caenorhabditis elegans, microscopic worms about 1 mm long, aboard Cygnus XL operated by Northrop Grumman. The spacecraft will be launched using a Falcon 9 from SpaceX.
The worms will travel in petri dishes inside a compact pod measuring 4 x 4 x 12 inches (10 x 10 x 30 cm). Once aboard the ISS, the pod will initially remain inside the station before being placed on an external platform, where it will stay for up to 15 weeks.
Scientists will monitor the worms using automated miniature cameras that capture fluorescent signals from their cells in real time. The fully automated setup means astronauts will not need to intervene in the experiment.
“By studying how these worms survive and adapt in space, we can begin to identify the biological mechanisms that will ultimately help protect astronauts.”
The study aims to understand how space conditions such as microgravity and radiation affect cells and genes. Researchers believe this data will help develop strategies to protect astronauts on long-duration missions.
The experiment has been developed by scientists from the University of Exeter and University of Leicester, with support from the UK Space Agency.
The pod is designed to maintain stable conditions, including temperature, atmosphere, and nutrient supply through an agar-based system.
The findings are expected to support future missions under Artemis program, where astronauts will spend extended periods on the Moon. Scientists say understanding biological responses to space is critical, as astronauts face risks such as bone and muscle loss, vision issues, reduced red blood cells, and increased cancer risk due to radiation.
The study could play an important role in shaping safer long-duration missions, including future plans for human settlements on the Moon and Mars.
