In a move that could improve the experience for millions of users, Google is working on a new optimisation technique that may deliver a noticeable performance boost across Android smartphones.

Details shared on the Android Developers blog by Software Engineer Yabin Cui highlight changes being made to the Android kernel, the core foundation of the operating system.

The Android LLVM toolchain team is introducing Automatic Feedback-Directed Optimisation (AutoFDO), a method that uses real-world usage patterns to improve system performance. The technique analyses how users interact with apps and prioritises frequently used code in future builds.

Google tested this approach using Pixel devices, simulating the launch of the 100 most popular apps. Based on these tests, commonly used processes are optimised to run faster and more efficiently.

Since the Android kernel accounts for nearly 40% of CPU usage, even small improvements can have a meaningful impact. Early results suggest a 4% improvement in cold app launch times and a 1% reduction in boot time.

“These aren’t just theoretical numbers,” said Cui. “They translate to a snappier interface, faster app switching, extended battery life, and an overall more responsive device for the end user.”

The AutoFDO technique is currently being rolled out to android16-6.12 and android15-6.6 branches, which support the latest Android versions. Google plans to expand its use across other parts of the operating system.

This could also help smartphone manufacturers optimise hardware performance, including areas like camera processing on devices from brands such as Samsung and Xiaomi.
