Skyroot advances Vikram-1 launch plans with successful fairing separation test

Marking a significant step in India’s private space journey, Skyroot Aerospace has successfully completed a crucial test for its Vikram-1 rocket, bringing it closer to its first launch scheduled from Sriharikota in May 2026.

The company, founded by former ISRO scientists, carried out a successful payload fairing separation test on April 8. This component is responsible for protecting satellites during launch and must split cleanly once the rocket reaches space. The test used actual flight hardware along with high-speed cameras to confirm that the fairing separated smoothly using a pneumatic system.

This milestone validates a critical stage of the launch process and strengthens confidence in Vikram-1’s readiness for its debut mission. The rocket is designed using lightweight carbon composites and features 3-D-printed engines, enabling it to carry payloads of up to 350kg to low Earth orbit.

The development marks an important achievement for India’s growing private space sector. It also aligns with the broader Make in India initiative, focusing on building and advancing indigenous technology capabilities.

With this successful test, Skyroot Aerospace moves a step closer to making Vikram-1’s maiden launch a reality in 2026.
