Sony Pictures restructures operations, cuts jobs to focus on future growth areas

In a major restructuring move, Sony Pictures Entertainment has initiated layoffs affecting a few hundred employees across its film, television, and corporate divisions.

The workforce reduction is part of a broader organisational realignment, with cuts underway and expected to continue over the coming months. The company employs around 12,000 people globally.

Among key leadership changes, Colin Davis, EVP of Comedy Development, is set to exit the company.

Sources indicate that the layoffs are not purely cost-driven but are part of a “targeted and strategic” shift aimed at focusing on future growth areas. These include franchise strategy and brand expansion, anime, immersive experiences, next-generation content, platform-native content including YouTube, and deeper integration with Sony Group’s ecosystem, especially video game adaptations.

The restructuring was communicated by CEO Ravi Ahuja in an internal memo, where he said, “Over the past year, we have sharpened our strategy and clarified where we believe the greatest opportunities exist.”

He added, “As we lean into those priorities, we need to operate with greater focus, speed, and alignment… With that, we are reducing roles in certain areas while increasing focus and investment in others that are most critical to our future.”

As part of the changes, Sony’s Game Show Group will be merged with GSN under Suzanne Prete. Sony Pictures Television’s nonfiction division will move under TV studios president Katherine Pope, and the company will shut down VFX firm Pixomondo.

Ravi Ahuja, who took over as CEO in January following Tony Vinciquerra’s retirement, is steering the company toward key content and IP-driven growth areas. These include the Peanuts IP, a deal with Big Shot Pictures, and adaptations of PlayStation franchises such as “The Last of Us” and the upcoming “God of War” series.

Sony also plans to expand major franchises including “The Boys,” “Spider-Man,” “Ghostbusters,” “Outlander,” and “Jeopardy!”.

The move reflects a broader industry trend where media companies are restructuring to align with evolving content consumption and digital platforms.
