As part of its ongoing focus on artificial intelligence, Meta is reportedly restructuring its workforce, which includes job cuts and changes to internal job roles.

According to a report, the company is planning to lay off up to 200 employees across its US-based teams. The layoffs are expected to impact 124 roles in Burlingame and 74 roles in Sunnyvale, based on filings with California’s Employment Development Department. These job cuts are likely to take effect by the end of May.

This move follows an earlier round of layoffs in January, when Meta reduced 10% of its workforce in the Reality Labs division, affecting nearly 1,500 employees. The decision was reportedly aimed at reallocating resources towards AI-focused initiatives.

At the same time, the company is said to be phasing out traditional middle management roles. Instead, it is introducing new designations such as AI builder, pod lead, and org lead, particularly within its Reality Labs unit. These roles are expected to support a leaner organisational structure and align with the company’s AI-driven strategy.

Reports also suggest that Meta has reduced hiring for middle management positions. Data from job listings indicates a 12.3% drop in such roles in 2025 compared to the previous year. The company is now increasingly hiring for “org lead” roles instead of conventional manager titles in mid-to-senior levels.

It remains unclear whether these new titles come with revised responsibilities or are mainly a change in designation. While roles like AI builder suggest deeper integration of AI tools, there has been no official confirmation from the company on the exact scope of these positions.

The developments reflect a broader shift in workforce strategy, as companies continue to optimise operations and adapt to AI-led transformation.
