Google launches Gemma 4 open-source AI model with agentic

In a major step towards expanding its open-source AI ecosystem, Google has introduced the Gemma 4 model, bringing new capabilities aimed at developers and enterprises.

The latest Gemma 4 AI model builds on its predecessor by adding agentic workflows and improved reasoning abilities. Unlike Gemma 3, which focused on text and visual reasoning, the new version enables users to develop autonomous AI agents with enhanced performance.

Gemma 4 is available in 4 configurations: Effective 2B (E2B), Effective 4B (E4B), 26B Mixture of Experts (MoE), and 31B Dense. The model also features an expanded context window of 256K tokens, up from 128K tokens earlier, and is trained on more than 140 languages.

One key update is its release under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing both academic and commercial use. Developers can access the model through Google AI Studio and Vertex AI or download it from platforms like Hugging Face, Kaggle, and Ollama for local deployment.

Gemma 4 introduces 3 major capabilities: advanced reasoning, agentic workflows, and code generation. It supports multi-step planning, improved mathematical reasoning, and better instruction handling. It also enables function calling and structured JSON outputs, making it suitable for building AI-driven agents.

The model also offers support for offline code generation, giving users more control over privacy and security. While its performance compared to proprietary tools remains unclear, its open availability is seen as a strong advantage.

Additional features include native support for video and image processing with variable resolutions. Google says the model can handle tasks like OCR and chart analysis. The E2B and E4B variants also support audio input for speech recognition and understanding.

With these updates, Google aims to make advanced AI tools more accessible while enabling developers to build scalable and intelligent applications.
