Microsoft to invest $10 billion in Japan to expand AI and cybersecurity capabilities

In a significant push to strengthen its presence in Asia, Microsoft has announced an investment of 1.6 trillion yen ($10 billion) in Japan between 2026 and 2029.

The plan focuses on expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure and enhancing cybersecurity collaboration with the Japanese government. The announcement was made during a visit to Tokyo by Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President Brad Smith.

As part of the initiative, Microsoft will launch a large-scale training program to build future talent. The company aims to train 1 million engineers and developers by 2030. This effort aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to drive growth through advanced technologies while ensuring national security.

Microsoft will also partner with domestic firms such as SoftBank and Sakura Internet to expand AI computing capacity within Japan. This collaboration will allow businesses and government bodies to store sensitive data locally while using Microsoft Azure services, improving both infrastructure and data security.

In addition, the company plans to strengthen cybersecurity cooperation with Japanese authorities. This includes sharing intelligence on cyber threats and working together on crime prevention measures to protect digital systems.

The investment comes at a time when AI adoption in Japan is rising. Since 2024, nearly 1 in 5 working-age individuals have started using generative AI tools. However, government estimates suggest a shortage of over 3 million AI and robotics workers by 2040.

Microsoft’s investment and training plans are expected to help address this talent gap while supporting Japan’s long-term technological growth.
