In a major push to expand its global infrastructure, Nebius Group has announced plans to set up a large-scale AI-focused data center in Lappeenranta. The project is valued at over $10B and marks a significant step in strengthening its presence in Europe.
The upcoming facility will have a capacity of 310 megawatts, making it one of the largest AI-focused data centers in the region. It is being developed in partnership with Polarnode and will begin operations in phases starting in 2027.
The data center is designed to support the training of AI models and the deployment of AI applications. It will not be dedicated to a single client, allowing Nebius to serve a wide range of customers, including enterprises, AI-native companies, and research institutions.
This investment reflects the growing global demand for AI computing infrastructure. Nebius has already secured major contracts worth over $40B with companies such as Microsoft and Meta, highlighting the scale of demand driving its expansion.
Finland was selected due to its strong advantages for data center operations. These include low energy costs, access to renewable power, and a cold climate that helps reduce cooling requirements. These factors are becoming increasingly important as companies focus on efficiency and sustainability.
The new facility will be Nebius’ largest site outside the United States. It is expected to contribute significantly to the company’s global capacity and strengthen its position in the competitive AI cloud market.
This development reflects a wider industry trend toward building dedicated AI infrastructure, as traditional cloud systems struggle to meet the rising computational needs of next-generation technologies. Projects like this are shaping the future of global AI deployment and digital infrastructure.
