In a notable update for in-car technology, a leading AI company has expanded its chatbot’s reach by bringing it to Apple CarPlay through iPhones running iOS 26.4.
According to a report, the latest version of the ChatGPT app now supports CarPlay, allowing users to interact with the assistant directly from their car’s interface. This follows the introduction of support for voice-based AI apps in iOS 26.4.
The CarPlay version is built entirely around voice interaction, in line with safety guidelines. Users can speak to the assistant just like they would using voice mode on their iPhone. No text responses are shown on the screen. The interface remains simple, offering only basic controls such as an end call button, mute or unmute toggle, and access to previous voice interactions.
The CarPlay system limits apps to specific categories and requires developers to follow predefined templates. With iOS 26.4, a new category called “voice-based conversational apps” was introduced, making it possible for services like ChatGPT to integrate into the driving experience while ensuring hands-free usage.
The feature follows strict requirements where voice must remain the primary mode of interaction, and visual distractions must be avoided. ChatGPT is among the first major AI platforms to adopt this approach.
The update is available through the latest version of the ChatGPT app on iPhone, and it requires devices to be running iOS 26.4 or newer to work with CarPlay.
In a related development, the company has reportedly paused its planned “Adult Mode” feature for ChatGPT indefinitely. The feature, first announced in October 2025, has faced delays due to concerns around ethical risks, including emotional dependency and potential reputational impact. Technical challenges, such as training models for explicit content and sourcing safe datasets, have also contributed to the delay.
