Google study warns quantum computers could break encryption sooner than expected

A new study from Google has raised fresh concerns about the future of digital security, suggesting that quantum computers may need far less computational power than previously believed to break encryption.

The findings indicate that current cryptographic systems, including those protecting digital assets, could be more vulnerable than earlier estimates suggested. This has sparked renewed worries across the crypto industry about the long-term security of blockchain-based systems.

According to the research, earlier assumptions about the scale of quantum computing required to crack encryption may have been overstated. Improvements in quantum error correction and algorithm efficiency could significantly reduce the resources needed, potentially accelerating the timeline for real-world attacks.

The study noted that “resource estimates can be significantly reduced” and that “improved techniques could make such attacks more feasible.” Researchers also stressed the importance of early awareness, stating that understanding these risks is essential to ensure that “cryptographic systems remain secure against future quantum adversaries.”

The warning comes at a time when concerns around crypto security are already increasing. A report published in October 2025 by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis estimated that more than $75 billion (around Rs. 6,65,000 crore) in cryptocurrency is linked to illegal activities. It also pointed out that a large portion of these transactions remains traceable on public blockchains, highlighting both transparency and risk in the ecosystem.

Google emphasised the need for responsible disclosure to give the industry time to adopt quantum-resistant security solutions. The findings serve as a signal for organisations to act early, as advancements in quantum computing continue to bring theoretical risks closer to reality.
