National Grid UK plans $400 million GCC in India to bring engineering work in-house

In a strategic shift towards in-house capabilities, National Grid UK is setting up a Global Capability Center (GCC) in India with an investment of up to $400 million, marking a major move in its digital transformation journey.

The new center is expected to employ around 1,000 people once fully operational. It will focus on key functions such as system modeling and data management, highlighting a significant boost for India’s technology ecosystem.

This development comes as the company’s existing outsourcing arrangement for certain engineering services is nearing its end. The transition reflects National Grid’s plan to gradually move these operations in-house over the next few years.

The decision also follows a dip in the company’s revenue to £18.6 billion last year, prompting a renewed focus on efficiency and transformation.

As part of this shift, leading IT firms have been invited to bid for projects starting May 2026. The move positions India alongside global players like ABB and Hitachi Energy, while opening up new opportunities for skilled professionals in the country.
